Assessment and Grading
(1) Examinations consist of quizzes, midterm exams, end-of-semester/year-end exams, resit (make-up) exams, excuse-based make-up exams, single-course exams, and additional exams. Resit exams are held subject to the approval of the University Senate. The resit exam grade replaces the end-of-semester/year-end exam grade for the relevant course.
(2) At the beginning of the semester, each course instructor announces in writing the weights of the midterm(s), quizzes, assignments, practicals, and other coursework for which students are responsible in the course grade. The combined weight of these assessments in the course grade may not be less than 40% nor more than 70%. For courses delivered via distance education, the weighting is 30% for exams conducted by remote access and 70% for in-person end-of-semester exams.
(3) Quizzes need not be announced to students in advance. Midterm and end-of-semester/year-end exams are administered during the examination periods that follow the regular academic schedule and are specified in the academic calendar. The end-of-semester/year-end exam schedule is announced on the date set in the academic calendar. Except for courses—such as project and laboratory courses—for which the relevant administrative board deems an exam unnecessary due to the nature of the course, an end-of-semester exam is held for all courses. In compelling circumstances, exams may be administered on weekends. Additional exams are exam rights granted to students under the rules set out in the principles governing additional exams and additional time at the end of the maximum period of study. The dates and venues of midterm, end-of-semester/year-end, and additional exams are determined and announced by the relevant administrative boards. Students must take exams at the predetermined dates and locations and must carry their ID card and any other required documents or permitted auxiliary materials.
(4) Students who cannot take midterm exams for justified and valid reasons must notify the relevant dean’s office/directorate in writing within three business days following the end of their excuse. Students whose excuses are accepted as justified and valid by the relevant administrative board will take their midterm(s) on a date set by the course instructor. Exams taken during a period covered by a medical report are deemed invalid. If a student becomes ill after taking an exam and obtains a medical report, and then participates in a second exam on the same day, the time indicated on the report is taken into account: exams taken before the report time are considered valid. Excuses are not accepted for failure to attend end-of-semester/year-end, resit, and courses assessed through continuous evaluation.
(5) During examination periods, no more than three exams may be held on the same day from the courses of the program and semester in which the student is enrolled.
(6) Exams are principally administered in written form. However, depending on circumstances and needs, exams may also be administered in written and oral/practical formats by decision of the relevant unit’s administrative board.
(7) Students who cheat, attempt to cheat, or assist in cheating, as well as those determined to have cheated or assisted in cheating during the evaluation of exam papers, are deemed unsuccessful and are subject to the relevant legal and regulatory provisions.
(8) Exam documents are retained for at least two years.
