The PhD Program in Arabic Language Education at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakıf University started education and instruction in the 2025–2026 academic year.

Qualification Awarded
|
Students who successfully complete the PhD Program are awarded a PhD degree in Arabic Language Education.

Admission Requirements
• Candidates applying to the PhD program must hold a master’s degree with thesis from the Department of Arabic Language Education.
• Candidates applying to the PhD program who hold a master’s degree with thesis from one of the departments of Arabic Language and Literature or the Faculties of Theology/Islamic Sciences are required to take scientific preparation courses.
• Candidates must have a minimum weighted graduate grade point average of 2.50 out of 4.00, or an equivalent score out of 100 as determined by the Council of Higher Education.
• Candidates must have obtained a minimum standard score of 60 in the verbal score type from the Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES).
• Candidates must have obtained a minimum score of 60 in Arabic from YDS, YÖKDİL, or another foreign language examination recognized as equivalent by the Council of Higher Education.
• In the evaluation for admission to the PhD Program in Arabic Language Education, the overall achievement score is calculated by taking 50% of the ALES score, 30% of the foreign language score, and 20% of the master’s degree grade point average.
• In order for candidates to be ranked, their overall achievement score must be at least 65. In the event of equality in the overall achievement score, priority is given to the candidate with the higher ALES score.
• Candidates who do not attend the evaluation examination are considered unsuccessful. Candidates are ranked according to their overall achievement scores and placed in the program to which they have applied until the quota is filled.
• The required application documents, application deadlines, and other procedures and principles regarding the graduate programs to which students will be admitted are determined by the Senate upon the proposal of the Institute and announced at the beginning of each semester for student admission.

Higher Grade Transition
|
Graduates who successfully complete the PhD program may engage in postdoctoral research, academic studies, and professional activities requiring expertise, both in their own fields and in multidisciplinary fields, in line with their academic qualifications and foreign language proficiency.

Graduation Requirements
The PhD program based on a master’s degree consists of eight semesters of education, a qualifying examination, and dissertation work. For students admitted with a master’s degree with thesis, the maximum period for completion is twelve semesters. The maximum period for successfully completing the required credit-bearing courses in the PhD program is four semesters for students admitted with a master’s degree with thesis. Students who fail to successfully complete their credit-bearing courses within this period and who do not meet the minimum GPA requirement of 3.00 out of 4.00 shall be dismissed from the University.
For students admitted with a master’s degree with thesis, the PhD program consists of at least 21 credits and a minimum of 240 ECTS credits, including at least seven graduate-level courses, a seminar, dissertation proposal, qualifying examination, and dissertation work, provided that each academic year is not less than 60 ECTS credits.
The appointment of the advisor must be completed no later than the beginning of the third semester. Students are required to complete their coursework within a maximum of four semesters.
In order for a student to be eligible to take the dissertation defense examination, they must have one article based on their dissertation work accepted for publication, ready for publication, or published in a national or international peer-reviewed journal, or must have two papers accepted for presentation at leading national or international conferences in the field.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of our department have employment opportunities not only as Arabic language teachers, but also as teachers, translators, and specialists in all ministries where their expertise is needed, such as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, as well as in institutions such as the Presidency of Religious Affairs, the General Directorate of Foundations, and the General Directorate of State Archives. In addition, they may also work as academics in various Arabic-related programs at other universities.

Assessment and Grading
In order for students to take the final exams, they must have attended 70% of the theoretical courses and 80% of the practice/laboratories.
At least one midterm exam is given for a course in each semester. At the beginning of the semester, the Institute Directorate and students are informed about how the midterm, semester studies and final exams will be reflected in the success grade of that course, and the content of the course for the whole semester on a weekly basis, the course book and the related literature, the semester exam and application dates. The course grade to be given to the student is appreciated by the faculty member according to the principles included in the course introduction information given to the students and the institute at the beginning of the semester, taking into account the midterm exams, the final exam, and/or the evaluation of the project work at the end of the semester, as well as the course work during the semester and the course attendance.
Make-up exams are opened in graduate courses. With the decision of the Graduate School Administrative Board, students can repeat the courses they have been successful in in order to increase their grade point average.
In order to be considered successful in a course, students must have received at least a (CB) grade from the master's, doctorate/art proficiency in that course.
